Brainspotting and ART® for Pregnancy Loss: How Brain-Based Therapy Can Help You Heal

October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. For a lot of moms, it's a month of candles, names said out loud, and finally feeling seen. For others, it's a reminder of something they're still carrying quietly, months or even years later.

If that's you, I want you to know this: if your grief feels stuck, it doesn't mean you're doing it wrong. Sometimes talking about your baby helps a lot. And sometimes you can talk about it a hundred times and the same moment still hits like it just happened.

That's where brain-based therapies like Brainspotting and Accelerated Resolution Therapy® (ART) can help.

Why pregnancy loss can feel "stuck"

Losing your baby isn't just sad. For many moms, it's also scary, sudden, and completely out of their control. When something like that happens, your brain can store it less like a memory and more like a threat that's still happening. So you might notice:

•    The same images replaying: the ultrasound room, the bleeding, the moment you knew

•    Your body tensing up at doctor's offices, pregnancy announcements, or the date your baby was due

•    Anxiety about your body, your health, or trying again

•    Grief that feels frozen, or that comes in waves that knock you flat

None of this means you're broken. It means your brain and body are still trying to protect you from something that already happened. Brain-based therapies work with that, not against it.

What is Brainspotting?

Brainspotting was developed by Dr. David Grand in 2003, and it's built on a simple idea: where you look affects how you feel.

In a session, you bring up something that feels heavy, like a memory, a feeling, or a sensation in your body. Your therapist helps you find an eye position (a "brainspot") connected to that feeling, and you hold your gaze there while your brain does its processing. You don't have to narrate every detail out loud. A lot of the work happens quietly, below words.

For pregnancy loss, Brainspotting can help with:

•    Grief that feels too big to put into words

•    Body-based reactions like tightness, panic, or numbness

•    Guilt, "what ifs," and self-blame that talking hasn't touched

What is Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)?

ART is a brief, structured form of therapy that helps your brain reprocess distressing memories so they don't carry the same emotional charge anymore. It uses guided eye movements and visualization, and it follows a step-by-step process led by a trained therapist.

A few things people tend to appreciate about ART:

•    You don't have to describe every detail of what happened if you don't want to

•    You stay awake, alert, and in control the whole time (it's not hypnosis)

•    It's brief, and many people notice a shift within just a few sessions

•    You keep the facts of what happened. What changes is how much it hurts to remember them.

ART has been studied for trauma, anxiety, depression, and grief, including bereavement.

What healing can feel like

Healing from pregnancy loss doesn't mean forgetting your baby. It never means that.

After ART, people often describe feeling:

•    Calmer, and more in control

•    Like the memory is still there, but it doesn't knock the wind out of them anymore

•    Like someone turned the dial down on the anxiety and panic

•    Lighter, with more room to remember their baby with love instead of only pain

In my practice, that's the goal: not moving on from your baby, but being able to carry them without it hurting this much.

Brainspotting vs. ART: Which One Is Right for Me?

Both are brain-based, both work with your eyes, and both can help when talk therapy alone isn't moving things. The biggest difference is how they feel:

•    Brainspotting is more open and client-led. It follows wherever your brain and body take you.

•    ART is more structured and directive, with a clear step-by-step process, and it's usually brief.

You don't have to figure this out on your own. We'll talk about what you're carrying and what feels right, and either one can be combined with talk therapy.

You Don't Have to Carry This Alone

Whether your loss was last month or years ago, your baby still matters, and so does your grief. If it feels stuck, there are ways to help it move.
